The Workbench

I was going to mow this morning and didn’t have it in me.

That’s not like me, I’m usually up and Adam on these things. I’m noticing it more lately — a Sunday morning where the body says no before the list gets a vote. So I told my wife I was going to sit with a cup of coffee for a while, and I did, and then we went to church.

When we got there she looked at my son and me and said we weren’t going to the gym today. Rest day. Not a suggestion.

She’s been the biggest supporter of every fitness thing I’ve done this year. When she’s the one calling it off, I listen.

So after lunch and a nap I did two small things instead.

The first was clean the central vacuum. We’ve had it the whole time we’ve lived here, and I’ve never known how to clean the filter and never made the time to find out. It’s been on the list so long the list stopped noticing it.

Ten minutes. That’s what it took. Ten minutes for a thing that had been sitting there for the better part of a year, and now it works the way it’s supposed to.

The second was the workshop.

I have a long list of projects before that space is what I want it to be. Storage, organization, a real layout. None of that happened today. What happened is that I cleared off the work tables, which took maybe forty-five minutes, and for the first time in longer than I want to admit, I can see the top of them.

That’s it. I can see the surface I’m supposed to be building on.

I stood out there afterward for a minute just looking at it.

Then dinner, and the evening with my teo favorite people, and now this.

I know I’ll be thinking tomorrow about the yard. I know the workshop still needs everything it needed yesterday except a clean table. But the vacuum took ten minutes, and the bench took forty-five, and both of them had been waiting on nothing but me.

Big walk tomorrow. Gym in a day or two.

Tonight I’m going to sleep well, on my wife’s orders.
